Ah yes, “Battle of Evermore”! I was hoping that when they did “Lord of the Rings” that they would’ve put that music into the score. Robert Plant was a big Tolkein fan and songs like “Ramble On” and “Battle” were inspire by that trilogy. What other bands do you listen to? I’m always on a search for good music…..

We didn't meet. I looked at your place from across the railroad tracks, after it had become a dress shop. I live near Burke NOW. I ventured to Hamptom a couple times to see the Cherry St. lofts, and other projects your brother with the boundless energy had wrestled from the ruins. I do home repair/electrical work, but I'm not sure that's all I do, I'm still hoping to find out! I love the newspaper form of the cover. One of my favorite songs is "Battle of Evermore", but there's lots of other bands I'd rather listen to....

Thanks for the interest and feedback Tommy.

My goal for the cover of this “Antho-ology” (nice, I like that word :o) was to try and convey that the majority of cartoons have come from major influences in my life. That’s why the newspaper concept has all of the different stories on it mixed with some of the Hickory Flats characters. There’s Bear Bryant, Tom Landry, Elvis, Johnny Cash, C.S. Lewis, Elton John, Charles Shultz, Henry Ketcham, Bill Watterson and last but not least, Led Zeppelin. Every one of those people impacted my life in a very positive way and when I looked at the common denominator it had to do with joy, laughter, music, and ideals. Led Zeppelin, for me, has always been very thoughtful, happy music (The Ocean, Kashmir, Stairway to Heaven, The Rover, etc.) and so, they made the front cover.

Also, as for the cover, I wanted to do it in Newspaper form and in black and white because we have become such a high tech, computerized, unbelievable graphics, etc. entertainment age that I think people sometimes are a little bit nostalgic for the older, slower, times. We’ll see. Thanks for being a sounding board.

By the way, I used to live in Hampton. Did we ever get a chance to meet? What do you do for a living?

Hey Anthony,

Did you say you're publishing a "compilation", or an "Antho-logy"?? Sorry if I got the wordage confused, you can just chock it up to "slainguage"!

As to your cover, I read this cartoon before, and the Led Zeplin bit confuses me, I like the rest.

You have a great talent - thanks for sharing it! Good luck with your project!!

Tommy

Hey Tommy –

Thanks for your interest. Actually, I have been working on Hickory Flats but not in daily submittals. I’m presently fine tuning and editing the over 120 cartoons that I’ve done in the last 2 years and I am getting ready to publish a compilation. The name of the book is “Hickory Flats – The Funny Pages – Volume 1” . I’ve attached the rough draft of the cover. What do you think?

Thanks again,
Anthony

I’ll see what I can do.

Hey, Anthony! We’ve got a fan jonesin’ for new HF content.

Hey Burke, your brother over there on Hickory Flats has got writer's block, or something. Send him a nudge. Tell him to read the newspapers, especially the locals!
